Banks & Money

These days, people pay mostly by credit or debit card, their iPhone or Watch. Most places accept these. There are however, a few important exceptions which may require cash. These include, but certainly not limited to:

  • Night markets
  • Normal markets stalls, for example at St Foy on a Saturday

Here are a few hints on places to get cash plus a cash-saving bit of advice!

Gensac

There is a Credit Agricole on the D16, on the left, (not the same part where the Spar is).

St Foy

There is a Bank Populaire with a cash machine on the main street through St Foy, Rue de la République.

Pineuilh / E.Leclerc

When driving into E.Leclerc, on the left there is a Crédit Mutuel du Sud.

Save Your Money

If you buy things on your credit card, you will be paying at least two of these charges:

  • A fixed percentage of the foreign transaction
  • A transaction charge for the foreign transaction
  • The buy/sell exchange rate not the interbank rate

This is robbery. How is this for a fact… which company is the one of the most profitable per-head? No it is not Microsoft, or Amazon or Google…. drum-roll one is Visa. So don’t feel sorry for them.

Instead, use Wise (formally TransferWise) or Revolut. They make the exact costs totally transparent. You simply upload your hard earned cash and then convert to EUR for peanuts at the interbank rate (not the buy/sell rate). Then there are no transaction costs when you spend your EUR. You can even take out some EUROs from a cash machine for free!

I’ve personally saved A LOT OF MONEY… and totally recommend it.
