Curiosities

Here is a collection of curiosities, or strange things in and around Magnolia.

There are also a couple of photos of the wild fire smoke from the 2022 wild fires that were burning south of Bordeaux, 50km away!

There is a buddha in the grounds. He moves frequently, never in the same place for long. See if you can find him.

At the front of the first floor of Magnolia, running along the floor from one side of the house to another is a metal pipe that looks like water piping for the central heating. It is not, it is the bar that holds the house together. There is also on in the attic, but that has been hidden.

In the cellar, it looks like concrete pillars and beams have been installed to stabilise the house. That is true, but actually, it is believed that the concrete has entombed the original wooded beams and pillars.

M. David had no bath and certainly no shower. Electricity only arrived in the 1960s. There was a sink in the front hall, 1st floor.

The garden well water is super clear. We dropped a fishing line in. It was taken away by the current. The water is, we beleive drinkable – but don’t try it!

You will notice that the back of the house is 6-8 cm higher. From the oven in the kitchen look through the doors to the downstairs bedroom. Check out the door frames. You will notice that the corners join well – no paint cracks. This implies that the frames were installed after the shift in the building. If the point work does crack, it is an early warning.

In the spring of 2021, there was the sound of helicopters in the sky, hovering. They were actually employed to keep heat and smoke low, from the fires lit between the vines. The idea is to prevent the grapes from freezing in the expectedly low temperatures but also to prevent them from warming too quicky when the sun rose, otherwise they would split. Sadly the year’s crop was greatly reduced due to the cold snap that followed an unusually warm early spring.

Around the area there are sequoia trees, both the world-most-massive type and the redwood world’s-tallest-type from the northern california coast. The one behind the house, has the characteristics of a giant sequioa found in the sierra nevada. Chateau Carbonneau has one that is more redwood in nature.

Driving around the countryside here, you will spot what looks like private cemetries. That is because they are. They belong to families here. The nearest is just up the hill 50-60m away.

The cellar did once fill with water when a pipe burst.

Wild Fire Smoke

In the summer of 2022, there were two vast wild fires in the Gironde. One was near to the Dune du Pilat and the other a little further inland, south of Bordeaux, so a good 50km away, as the crow flies.

One night, the wind changed direction and came in from the West pushing the smoke to Eynesse. By the end of the day it had luckily cleared.
