Toilets and Septic Fosse

Yup, your poop needs to go somewhere. In rural France few houses are connected to a central waste system. Each house has their own system, ours too.

All the toilets, showers and sinks plus dish-washer are all connected to our “Fosse-Sceptique” which is located underneath the main drive next to the well.

It is checked every year and emptied approximately every 4-5 years.

Happy Toilet Rules

The pipes will block if anything is put down the toilet other than toilet paper.

No sanitary products (sorry ladies), no condoms, no ear cleaners… nothing! We will find them later floating around. Please use the bins to dispose of these items.

You may also notice that we don’t use WC-Duck cleaner or those cube things that hang over the side of the toilet. This is also because the chemicals within them harm the natural processes that are happening within the Fosse. We do very occasionally, use a little bleach to clean the kitchen sink, but vary little and only when the sink really needs it.

The Fosse thanks you!

The Pump

You will may have noticed the pump in the barn. This pushes air into the fosse, aerating it. It is necessary for this type of fosse and runs 24/7. If it does stop working (which it has in the past) it is ok for up to 4 weeks. After that the fosse may start having issues, and I may have issues with the neighbours cool
